Three Crucial Tips for Preventing Door Lock Malfunctions

Blog

Residential door locks are used frequently. As a result, they are prone to accelerated degradation due to the constant movement of the internal mechanical parts. Over time, these devices will become worn out and begin to malfunction. If the functional problems are not solved, the lock will fail, necessitating expensive replacements. Fortunately, malfunctions can be prevented, and the rate of lock deterioration can be slowed down through proper upkeep. Here are simple maintenance practices to help in preserving your door locks.

Clean the Installed Lock

Door locks can accumulate a lot of dirt, depending on the environment and the usage habits. For instance, if the lock is exposed to dusty surroundings or handled with filthy hands on a regular basis, there will be faster build-up of dirt in the internal mechanism. If the internal parts are clogged, the lock will be more prone to sticking and will develop other problems. You can prevent these problems by cleaning the lock as required. Ideally, you should use a damp rag to eliminate dirt. Avoid the use of strong detergents which could cause lock corrosion.

Lubricate the Mechanism

Your door locks can benefit from periodic lubrication. In general, these locking devices are manufactured using metals. Metals are prone to rusting and corrosion; these processes leave deposits which promote lock sticking. Also, the rough surfaces of the internal metal parts generate a lot of friction. You can prevent rusting and minimise friction by using a lubricant in the lock. Under ideal circumstances, you should use a dry lubricant. Spray the material into the lock and insert your key to distribute the lubricant. Avoid petroleum oils because they will attract dust and cause lock clogging in cold weather.

Acquire Good Key Duplicates

Door locks can sustain damage due to the use of an old and damaged key. In simple terms, keys tend to sustain wear over time due to constant insertion, turning and removal. These actions change the original structure of the key, making it unsuitable for use in the lock. Moreover, a key can be degraded due to falls, improper storage and general accidents. If you continue to open and close your locks with the damaged unit, the internal components could be affected, causing a malfunction. Therefore, you should create some duplicate keys for your house and use them as replacements for your worn-out originals.

Finally, you should avoid causing damage to your locks by conducting DIY repairs. If your residential locks cause problems, consult a qualified locksmith for professional assistance.
