When it comes to priorities for the home, it's understandable to assume that safety and security is one of the most important. It may surprise you to know that many Australians may not take home security as seriously as they should. Statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that around 1 in 40 homes across the country experience a break-in in any given year.
Even more concerning is the fact that 1 in 8 households neglect to lock their doors on a regular basis. This startling figure is evidence that many people need to consider how safe and secure their home really is. Here are two ways that you can increase your home's security and make it a less attractive option for criminals to target.
1. Add deadbolts to your doors
Even if you're not someone who forgets to lock your door, adding a deadbolt is a wise move as far as increasing security. Most standard door locks aren't designed to withstand much pressure, and an experienced burglar can prise or kick it open in a matter of seconds.
Deadbolts are much sturdier than regular locks. They can only be opened with a key and can't be easily jimmied like a regular spring-loaded lock. Deadbolts have extra-long barrels that penetrate deep into the door frame. This is further strengthened by a solid metal plate that is screwed into the frame where the bolt enters.
2. Increase your window security
Windows are one of the most common entry points for home break-ins. Despite this, many people don't have any extra security measures on them except for the standard closing mechanism that they came installed with. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that you can make them more secure and difficult to use for break-ins.
Adding high-quality security screens is an excellent choice. These should be metal framed panels that are bolted into place on the window frame, not ones that simply clip on. Adding extra key-operated locks that bolt into the top of the window frame is also a highly effective security measure that makes windows a less appealing entry point.
If you're concerned about the level of security that your home provides, schedule a time for your local residential locksmith to inspect your home. They can advise you on the best options for your doors and windows and may even be able to point other security weak spots that you might not have considered.
