How Safe Is the Safe in Your Home?

Blog

Everyone has a residential safe where they store valuables, money, family heirlooms and other things that should not be left lying around such as guns. Due to its function, a safe should have a quality lock that cannot be manipulated or bumped by thieves or other unauthorized persons. Unfortunately, most people have never looked into the security of their safes after buying. You don't have to wait until a catastrophic event occurs in your home for you to improve the security of your safe. That's why you need to ask yourself the following questions in a bid to find out whether you need a new locking system for the safe in your home.

When did you last clean the lock?

Most safes have a lock that has mechanical parts and gears that turn as you open and close it. When dirt and grime accumulate on these parts, they can prevent the lock from turning smoothly when you feed the combination code. In some cases, the lock may fail to work entirely, and you will be forced to crack the safe to access its contents. Regular cleaning of your safe's lock can save you from causing physical damage to the locking mechanism. Use a clean cloth to wipe the gears and combination lock to prevent them from seizing up.

Has the safe suffered physical damage recently?

A safe is not just meant to protect your valuables from burglary; it also protects them in the event of an earthquake, fire or floods. If one of these unforeseen events has occurred in your home, it may be a good idea to check on the condition of the safe. If you have a fire-resistant safe, its contents may be safe after a fire, but its structure may be compromised. Ask a locksmith to inspect the safe and its locking mechanism to ensure that it is still capable of offering security to your valuables. If not, you can change the lock or invest in a new safe altogether.

Have you ever upgraded the safe's lock?

Have you had your safe for decades now but have never upgraded the locking system? If so, you should know that it may not offer the same security that it did a decade ago. Locking systems have changed over the years and thieves have come up with ways to manipulate even the most seemingly secure locks. There are various safer options today such as the biometric lock that requires your fingerprint or the electronic one where you feed a code. You can also install a surveillance camera in the room to monitor activity when you are not around.

Contact a 24/7 locksmith so that they can inspect your safe and help you find a quality lock that cannot be easily manipulated by burglars.
