Your Key Broke Off Inside the Lock? Here Is What You Should Do

Blog

A key breaking off inside the lock can be a frustrating experience. While it's recommended to seek the services of a locksmith right away, if you're handy, with a few simple tools and the right procedure, you may be able to remove the key on your own. To do this, here are some of the practical steps to follow.

Don't Try To Use The Key

As tempting as it may be, inserting the rest of the key inside the lock is a bad idea. By trying to use the key again, you may end up pushing the broken part further into your lock. This will only make it harder for you to remove it because you need it to be as shallow as possible in the lock for effective results. The method to remove the key may also depend on how deep the key is inserted into the lock. Therefore, don't try to use the key again because you may just increase the complexity of your task. Nevertheless, remember to keep the broken part because a locksmith may need it to cut a new key for you.

Look At How Much Of The Key Is Sticking Out

Your second step should be to assess the key regarding how much of it is sticking out. This will help you determine the ideal method to remove it. For instance, if a considerable portion of the key is sticking out, you may be able to just pinch it and gently withdraw it. If the key is not sticking out at all, you will need a slightly more sophisticated technique to remove it. The following step gives more insight on this.

Grab Your Tools And Begin Removing The Broken Key

A jig/scroll saw blade, a pair of needle-nosed pliers, some lubricating oil, and sometimes a screwdriver, are some of the tools you will need. If you're locked outside and can't access your tools, you can always borrow from a neighbour. Otherwise, just call a locksmith.

With your tools ready, apply some lubricating oil to the keyway. Doing this will loosen up the works and make the process much easier. Dry lubrication such as graphite spray lubricants is often recommended instead of their oil-based counterparts that tend to gum up the insides of the lock. Start by inserting the pair of pliers into your keyhole and try to grip and pull out the broken part. You have better chances of succeeding with this technique if all the key cuts are inside your lock. If the pliers don't do the trick, try your jig saw or scroll saw. With the teeth of the saw pointing downward, you need to push it as far as it can go until you feel them grabbing one of the key cuts. Then, start pulling it out slowly to bring the key with it.
