Homeowners rarely consider what type of door handle they require until the hardware becomes damaged. And if you have never had to purchase a new doorknob, you could become daunted by the multitude of types that are available in the market, as you may not have anticipated such as wide selection to choose from! The key (pun intended) to narrowing down your selection is establishing what the primary function of the lock will be. In general, there are three main categories of locksets that you can invest in, depending on the door handle's application. Below is a concise overview of the different locksets that you could install.
A keyed lockset
This type of door handle design is one of the omnipresent kinds of knobs that you will encounter. Since keyed locksets have the capability of being locked from either side of the knob, they are commonly installed on entryways both at the interior and exterior of the home. Keyed locksets are also the most secure option, so they are ideal for when you are in search of a door handle that will simultaneously provide you with both privacy and security.
A passage lockset
The main characteristic of the passage lockset's design is that the knob can freely be turned to open and close the door, but the knob itself is not lockable. Therefore, passage locksets, as suggested by their name, are principally installed in areas that are accessed routinely but still need a barrier. Some of the familiar places that you could fit a passage lockset include a hallway or a linen closet. However, you could also use this type of door handle in a playroom or a child's bedroom if you want to maintain some form of privacy but still be guaranteed that your child will not accidentally lock the door and become trapped in the room.
A privacy lockset
The distinguishing design trait of privacy locksets is that unlike most other locking systems that can be keyed on either side, this variety will only have key access on one side. The other side of the lock is typically fitted with a knob that usually has a small hole, which functions to provide emergency access in the event the door cannot be opened from the keyed side. Privacy locksets tend to be exclusively used for bathrooms so that it is only the occupant of the space who can lock the door. But there has been an increase in people also utilising this type of door handle as their central bedroom lock, too.
